What is Free Montgomery?
Free Montgomery is a start-up organization connecting with homeless people in Oakland, California, providing direct assistance, creating caring relationships, and advocating on their behalf. We do this in a number of ways, including:
- Providing direct outreach, delivering hot meals, healthy food, and clothing to “Free Montgomery Drop Zones” in Oakland.
- Developing personal relationships with homeless individuals that we meet, providing them with a sense of hope and community, offering advice or just a caring ear.
- Providing homeless individuals with part-time work, when we can.
- Participating in interactive, art-related events to raise awareness of the plight of homeless individuals and families.
These activities range from allowing children to artistically express themselves by legally tagging donated cars with spray paint to arranging music-related events, such as an evening of blues.
- Providing a safe location in West Oakland for events that Free Montgomery sponsors.
We recognize homeless people as members of our community who we can befriend and support. Homelessness is not a faceless, social issue, it’s a personal and often devastating experience that needs to be addressed with dignity and respect.
